This year’s Dallas ISD Food and Child Nutrition Service’s education theme is Eat Smart. Eat Local. As part of this, Child Nutrition Services is implementing Farm Fresh Fridays in addition to the Harvest of the Month.
Each Friday the students will have the option to choose a locally produced or grown item in the lunch line. Some featured items are oranges, tamales, apples, watermelon and black eyed peas.
Once a month, a locally grown fruit or vegetable is featured on the Dallas ISD menu. Students have the opportunity to learn “Fun Facts” about the featured produce item and the Texas farm where it was grown, and also have the opportunity to sample the item during Friday’s lunch period. Several months throughout the year, the students will receive a farmer trading card or other item to further educate about the featured item.
Parents, if you are interested in helping with Harvest of the Month, please contact Betsy Hardy. It requires a two-hour commitment, 10:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m., one Friday a month. All volunteers must be PTA members in good standing and must be cleared by the Dallas ISD volunteer background check.
