Principal’s Corner: Gradespeed, middle school construction, and dual language

Hello Mata Families,

It is amazing how quickly the time passes. The first six weeks has come and gone, and wow, what an eventful six weeks. We welcomed our families at our Meet the Teacher event, learned about our teachers’ goals at Open House, organized donation events, held PTA meetings, and kicked off our garden planting. It is great to have such a wonderful school community and family.

We are beginning the second six weeks, and this month, we have many activities planned.  On Oct. 12th, we have parent conference night scheduled from 4-7 p.m. Please sign up for a time with your child’s teacher. Also, please be reminded that there is no school on Friday, Oct. 13th and Friday, Oct. 20th. Our fourth annual Trunk or Treat will be on Saturday, Oct. 28th from 4-7 p.m.

At Mata, we pride ourselves on providing all students with an authentic Montessori curriculum within a public school setting.  One of the differences you will notice this year is that our teachers will be using Gradespeed as a means to communicate the progress of student work. The Montessori classroom helps a child gain independence and self-motivation as they choose which assignments to work on during the week. Students follow a work plan that they must complete weekly. Please encourage your students to complete lessons given. Please make sure you have signed up for Parent Portal so that you may view your child’s progress.

I’m excited to share with you some great news! As many of you know, Eduardo Mata Elementary was approved by the Dallas ISD Board to educate students from Pre-K-8th grade. At September’s board meeting, an additional $28 million dollars in bond money was awarded to us for an expansion of our campus! We will soon begin plans for constructing our new middle school wing! Our SBDM has a subcommittee that is working on plans for our expansion to 8th grade. We will hold a Middle School Information meeting in November to share more information about this great endeavor.

Another focus that our campus has this year is improving our dual language program. We are the only dual language Montessori in the district. We have partnered with PTA to assist with providing additional materials for our dual language classes. Our goal is to ensure that we are educating every student in both languages on grade level.

Please continue to check the calendar on the school’s website for upcoming events, meetings, and school closures.

I wish you all a wonderful 2nd six weeks, and as always thank you for choosing Eduardo Mata Elementary, “A Montessori School.”
