The Montessori Minute: Movement

Why is movement so important in a Montessori classroom? Why don’t they just stay in their seats?

In Montessori, movement is integral to learning. Its importance is well documented in Montessori: The Science Behind the Genius (available through Amazon). Whether it is moving labels and picture cards to match or building a project to demonstrate understanding, movement adds depth to the learning experience. Walking to the shelf to gather the golden bead quantities needed to compose a number also enables the child to plan and reflect upon the task at hand. At Mata, we find that movement awakens the mind, activates the organizing process, and helps develop independence. It is an essential dynamic of active learning.
